Why give?

The Bible has a lot to say about the way in which we handle money. In fact, Jesus spoke about money more than He spoke about even heaven or hell. So in Matthew 6:21, for example, He tells us plainly that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.

Ultimately, God is more interested in the attitude of our hearts than He is in our money, yet how we invest our finances says a lot about where our devotion really lies. Of course, you can give and fail to love, but what you cannot do is love Jesus and fail to give!

God owes us nothing, yet has given us everything as well as Jesus, His own Son. Giving, then, is nothing less than our response of worship to all that God has already done for us and is a basic part of what it means to be a Christian who is committed to a local church.

How to give?

The Bible sets out some helpful principles, (e.g. 2 Corinthians 9:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2  and 2 Corinthians 8:2-3), about how we should give:

  • FREELY … cheerfully and not under compulsion.
  • REGULARLY … each week or month.
  • PROPORTIONALLY … in line with our income.
  • GENEROUSLY … as an act of faith.
  • SACRIFICALLY … trusting God to provide for all our needs.
