Good question? In fact, probably the most important question any of us could ever ask. No matter what we think about Christianity, the Church, or even Christians we may know, few of us would deny that Jesus is the most famous person who has ever lived. More songs have been sung about him, pictures painted of him and books written about him than anyone else. Even our calendar divides time based on his life!
But who is he? Some people love him, others hate him. One way or the other, almost everyone has an opinion about him. Whatever we think, though, the reality is most people never really reject Jesus … they simply just never take the time to find out who he really is, to explore his claims and teaching or create the space to encounter his presence in their lives.
Nicky Gumbel, the founder of the Alpha course, writes: “Christianity is first and foremost about relationships rather than rules. It is about a person more than a philosophy. It is about the most important relationship of all: our relationship with the God who made us. Jesus said that the first and greatest commandment is to love God … You and I were created to live in relationship with God. Until we find that relationship there will always be something missing in our lives…”
Knowing the real Jesus changes everything and makes such a relationship possible. And it’s also right at the heart of everything we’re about at ONELIFE Church.
If you would like to find out more about knowing Jesus, below are a number of pointers, one or more of which you might want to consider taking as a next step:
Start by reading one or more of the Gospels and ask God to reveal the real Jesus to you as you do so. (The Gospels are the first 4 books of the New Testament part of the Bible. Each one is an account of the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus written by 4 different people – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.)
Ask someone you know who is a Christian what knowing Jesus means to them, or get in touch with us if you don’t know anyone who is a Christian.
Consider coming on our next Alpha or Christianity Explored course – courses designed to help you explore the claims and teachings of Jesus. Contact us for more details and to find out about when our next course is taking place.
Come along to one of our Sunday celebrations. We would love to meet you, grab a coffee and maybe even have an opportunity to chat through something of the difference that Jesus has made in our lives. Details of where and when we meet can be found here.
